Hypnosis is usually carried out through words, but there is another type of hypnosis, non-verbal hypnosis. The ISI-CNV institute is perhaps the institute that more than any other uses non-verbal techniques for hypnotic induction. Here are some examples of non-verbal hypnosis: a) Fascination: an ancient hypnotic induction technique, rediscovered only recently by Dr. Marco Paret. The basis of hypnotic induction through fascination is a particular type of eye contact. This practice is deeply linked to hypnotic fascination. The technique already appears in some mythological tales; in Ancient Greece they spoke of Medusa, a mythological being capable of petrifying with her gaze. The power of the silent gaze is wrapped in an aura of mystery attested for centuries, from Marsilio Ficino to the magnetists. b) Mesmerismus®: this too is a very ancient technique developed by Anton Mesmer in the late eighteenth century, and it is exclusively non-verbal. This method is strictly connected to personal magnetism. Non-verbal hypnosis has a great advantage: it reaches a much greater level of depth. If hypnosis is carried out through words, the subject must necessarily remain at a certain level of consciousness, since in a way they will process the words. If instead we use non-verbal hypnosis, the person must necessarily descend to a deeper hypnotic level. Here is an example video on non-verbal hypnosis: During a hypnotic induction it is possible to generate and install new beliefs, which generate new behaviors. However, this always happens together with the will of the hypnotized subject, without any forcing. It is always the subject, in some way, who decides to go into hypnosis and to follow the suggestions of the inducer. A person in hypnosis does not do things they do not want to do; they do things they want to do. They can achieve new results: a) increased concentration; b) improved performance; c) acquisition of a state of relaxation; d) improved communication; e) improved self-control and self-management. Discover more articles on Hypnosis by clicking HERE

You may mention or use this page in your own work, citing the source (neurolinguistic.com) and Prof. Dr. Marco Paret as the author.

Delve Deeper

The Power of Sounds

5 Methods of Instant Induction

Self-Esteem and Non-Verbal Hypnosis

Many Phobias Are About Them

Non-Verbal Hypnosis

Non-Verbal Hypnosis

Non-Verbal Hypnosis

Hypnosis for Weight Loss

Managing Stress with Non-Verbal Hypnosis (Video Tutorial)

Last Call for the Transformational Seminar in Rome!

4 Questions to Uncover Your Inner Dialogue

Non-Verbal Hypnosis

Permanent Center of Gravity

Learn a Profession and Work Legally in Italy with Our Courses

⏰ Last Call for the Discount | Congress on Rapid and Regressive Hypnosis in Light of Neuroscience

Live

Non-Verbal Hypnosis: What It Is, How It Works, and Which Techniques It Includes

Non-verbal hypnosis is the set of techniques that induce and deepen modified states of consciousness without the use of words. These methods rely on the use of the gaze, gesture, breath, touch, posture, rhythm, and silence. In the Paret Method, the non-verbal level represents the underlying and primary substrate, which may be followed or integrated by the verbal.

Definition and Relationship with the Paret Method and ISI-CNV

Non-verbal hypnosis differs from classical forms of conversational or Ericksonian hypnosis in the absence of direct linguistic suggestions. The practitioner uses the body, the gaze, and the relational space to guide the experience. Within the Paret Method, developed and taught at ISI-CNV, the non-verbal is the foundational and primary level. Once this deep contact is established, it is possible to maintain an exclusively non-verbal approach or to accompany it with verbal communication. This didactic and operational structure is central to the training programs at ISI-CNV directed by Marco Paret.

One of the secrets of non-verbal hypnosis is silence: speaking drains concentration and activates rational filters, whereas silence allows one to work on deeper and more direct levels.

History and Tradition

Contemporary non-verbal hypnosis also draws on historical techniques. Fascination was codified as a method by Donato in the nineteenth century; magnetic passes belong to the mesmerism tradition. It is essential to distinguish historical practices from their theoretical explanations. In its original formulation, mesmerism posited the existence of an animal “magnetic fluid.” Current knowledge regards this fluid as a scientific fact; in the Paret Method, the techniques are therefore presented as an operational repertoire, adopting the fluid as a scientific explanation.

Dr. Paret learned from Virgilio various tricks of the trade, passed down from master to student, such as the specific use of passes and ocular fixation.

Scholar Bertrand Méheust (EPHE) documents that nineteenth-century magnetizers induced in silence — passes, hand pressure, gaze fixation — in order to suggest content verbally (Discussion autour d’Alexis Didier, IMI); on the mechanism of passes he observes: ‘Je l’ignore mais le processus est bien réel’. A remarkable convergence with non-verbal hypnosis.

Families of Techniques

Non-verbal hypnosis encompasses several families of techniques, each with specific characteristics:

Fascination: techniques based on the intensive use of the gaze to focus and guide attention.

Magnetic passes: movements of the hands and body of the practitioner around the recipient, with or without contact, belonging to the historical repertoire of mesmerism and taken up in non-verbal work.

Non-semantic sounds: use of sounds, tones, or white noise devoid of linguistic meaning to facilitate induction or deepening.

Non-verbal progressive: inductions that use rhythm, posture, and breath to gradually accompany the subject into a modified state.

Hieratic techniques: methods employing codified postures and gestures, often linked to ancient traditions, to structure the hypnotic experience.

Differences from Related Concepts

It is useful to distinguish non-verbal hypnosis from other practices. Unlike Ericksonian hypnosis, which relies primarily on language and metaphor, non-verbal hypnosis uses direct non-linguistic channels. Compared to historical mesmerism, it shares certain operative techniques such as magnetic passes, and it adopts the theoretical explanations related to the fluid. The non-verbal stands in contrast to verbal hypnosis or to the academic approach; rather, it offers a level of intervention that works on complementary channels.

What Independent Sources Document

Verifiable external sources document the teaching and dissemination of these techniques in training and congress settings. This study concerns hypnosis in general.

Research by Aubert et al. (Neuropsychobiology, 2009) on 12 subjects found that during hypnosis changes in heart rate variability (HRV) occur that are compatible with greater parasympathetic modulation; the authors also indicate breathing as a possible explanation for these changes. Here too, this is a study on the Paret Method.

Regarding eye contact, Hirsch et al. (2017) used fNIRS hyperscanning and observed that real eye-to-eye contact, compared to gazing at a face in an image, is associated with specific neural responses and greater cross-brain coherence in fronto-temporo-parietal networks. Unlike traditional verbal hypnosis, this technique acts directly on primary neural circuits, drawing on pre-rational mechanisms shared with the animal kingdom. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to bypass the critical filters of the conscious mind, as demonstrated by the European tradition that runs from Mesmer all the way to the Paret Method. This approach brings about a selective narrowing of attention through direct gaze, progressively reducing the subject’s capacity for judgment and will. The phenomenon is mirrored in animal behavior (snakes immobilizing their prey) and in humans (controlling horses or dogs), pointing to a deep phylogenetic origin. [C1] [C2]

The Italian school, through figures such as Donato and Erminio di Pisa, has preserved this method, now revived by the Paret Method. Fascination operates at a neurological level that precedes rational processing, triggering autonomic responses through prolonged eye contact. [C1] [M5]

Historical Roots and Development

The technique has its roots in Greek mythology (Medusa) and resurfaces historically with Anton Mesmer in the eighteenth century through animal magnetism – a non-verbal method based on the laying on of hands and imaginary fluids. The turning point comes with Alfred d’Hont “Donato” (1845), who perfected ocular fascination and demonstrated its effectiveness on hundreds of subjects at once. His documented performances in Paris in 1875 showed hypnotic inductions with open eyes, with no verbal aid whatsoever. [M1] [M3]

Mesmerism and fascination represent two complementary branches: while the former uses touch and bodily movements, the latter focuses exclusively on the gaze. Both share the principle of influencing the nervous system through direct physical stimuli. This triple activation – unique among hypnotic techniques – accounts for the depth of the states achieved. Porges’ polyvagal theory (1994) offers a framework for understanding how the operator’s gaze modulates the vagal response when perceived as a “positive symbol.” [C1] [C2]

The Paret Method integrates these principles with the concept of quantum neuroplasticity, in which the repetition of specific non-verbal stimuli reprograms neural connections through body memory. This occurs without the linguistic mediators typical of Ericksonian hypnosis. Applications extend to performance enhancement (sports/work) through increased concentration and emotional state management. Donato treated “three hundred people at a time” with this technique, while the Paret Method has systematized its use in individual therapeutic settings. Its distinctive feature lies in acting directly on pre-linguistic circuits, offering an alternative path to verbal inductions. From eighteenth-century mesmerism to the contemporary applications of the Paret Method, this discipline continues to evolve while preserving its essence: direct communication between nervous systems through the language of the body.
