LESSON SEVENTY-THREE - THE GRANDEST SUCCESS IN LIFE
HE MAGNETISM CLUB OF AMERICA is an organization carried on by
correspondence in a general way, and by local meetings in a special way, that
came into existence in the year 1888, with the avowed purpose of turning into
practical use in daily life the newly formed habits and valuable principles of
this system of personal development. Human association and intercourse are
necessary parts of every normal and successful life. It is not good for man to
be alone. It is not good for woman to be alone. Nor is it good for human beings
to segregate themselves and live selfishly apart from other human beings.
Of course it is possible for a hermit to develop the gift of personal
magnetism, but he would have no use for it except to ennoble his own character
which, in his opinion, might be worth while.
But the pleasure, the enjoyment, the triumphs and the great achievements
of existence require the intermingling of humanity in multiform ways, with as
much variety of intercourse as is possible; and in and through all these
interwoven interests this power has its greatest opportunities.
The Magnetism Club of America has never advertised its existence, and
has never sought members. When local meetings are held they are composed of
persons of close acquaintance with each other. The general organization seeks
to help its members solve all the problems of this system as far as they desire
such help and, in turn, gathers a great fund of new
knowledge from experiments and experiences occurring in the lives of its members, which of
necessity becomes enormously valuable to future students.
There exists a widely held belief that the Magnetism Club of America is
exclusive, and that only certain persons are allowed to join it. This is not the fact. Every owner of this book is permitted to enter, and without any
initiation fees or annual
dues. But it must be
understood that the chief purpose of the Club is "helpfulness to
others." This is its
motto Its greatest goal in life is to establish the following conditions
1. The intermingling
of humanity,
2. In multiform ways,
3. With as much variety of
intercourse as possible,
4. Including ties of
friendship,
5. Family ties,
6. Business and professional
activities,
7. Social intercourse,
8. And systems of
affiliation for carrying on the great work of civilization and human
betterment.
The moving spirit of this organization is summed up in requests that
have come to us containing the following excellent demand: "Nearly
one-third of the time and attention of people is wholly wasted. Unrest is
universal, with the result that anything, no matter what, that will help kill
the dragging hours, is resorted to; and every normal man and woman looks back
on these wasted opportunities with bitter regret."
Real living, or the kind that counts for the utmost value in life, is
summed up in two phases:
1. Every person whose
existence is worth anything to himself or to the world, must at times BE ALONE
WITH HIMSELF.
2. When not alone with
himself, he should ally himself in as many ways as possible with other persons
for the purposes stated above.
The following persons must at times be alone: The inventor; the artist;
the poet; the writer; the musician in his hours of practice; the preacher in
preparing his sermons; the lawyer in studying the affairs of his clients; the
doctor in his difficult cases; the editor; the scientist; the professor, the
teacher; the student; the merchant in preparing his plans for building up
his business; the financier; the statesman; the judge; the employee who
seeks to make himself more and more valuable from day to day; and every devotee
of self-improvement. How to find the periods of solitude for these purposes is
part of the campaign of existence. But as soon as each period of work is
completed, all these people belong to the world; and what they produce must be
given to the world.
Magnetism and success are synonymous terms; and progress in life is
proof that they are moving onward. The best progress is that which is
practical, and that can be turned to actual uses. The individual who never goes
to bed at night unless he has in some degree added to his self-improvement
during the day, is moving onward to success; and that person who at the end of
each year has laid aside some part of his earnings or gains, is moving onward
to success. All others are stagnant, and are treading the road to failure.
Why then waste time and opportunity in idle reading, idle gloating over
scandal newspapers, idle companionship, idle card playing, loafing, and the
multitude of aimless so-called pleasures that leave only regrets after they
have passed in all their emptiness.
BE ALONE LONG ENOUGH FROM TIME TO TIME TO PLAN THE BETTERMENT OF
YOURSELF AND OF OTHERS. That
is the foundation of all success.
Then what you have accomplished you should turn to account among your
fellow beings. In that way you will find your pleasure in life, your enjoyment
of existence, and your only real triumphs in this world. As far as this earth
is concerned, there is no greater goal. But in order to do this you must
participate in multiform ways in the intermingling of humanity. And this must
be done without waste of time and opportunity. Here is the greatest field for
the uses of magnetism.
How to accomplish all these things is, and has been for many years, the
work of the Magnetism Club of America.
This Club inspires the inventor to solve his problems, and to win
recognition in the world. This Club paves the way for the minister to build up
a great following. This Club discloses the secrets of success in business and
in the financial world. This Club makes it possible for every employee to
better himself, and better his income each and every year of his active life.
This Club shows the way to the lawyer to win every honest case; to the doctor to do the
greatest good in his profession; to the teacher to develop all that is possible and worth while in the minds
of pupils; and to all persons it imparts the gift of establishing true and lifelong
friendships, and the power to destroy ah enmities.
As every Member of the Magnetism Club of America is not only helped but
is inspired by the influences of these teachings and is materially benefited
during his or her life, it is only fair that the Motto of the Club should be
remembered, which is "Helpfulness to Others." And that is why
every normal human being is in the world. You cannot imagine a case in which
any person could succeed wholly alone. There is no kind of success that is not
won by the intermingling of humanity in multiform ways.
First, come into the Magnetism Club of America by notifying the
publishers of this work that you desire to be admitted, addressing the name
given on the title page of this book. That is the best form of human association
for its use and possibilities are unlimited, and it leads to every great goal
in life.
Next, organize a Local Magnetism Club by bringing together five others
besides yourself, to meet from time to time to discuss and practice the
teachings of this book. Any six persons may effect such an organization; or may
depend solely on membership in the National Club, known as the Magnetism Club
of America which, for nearly forty years, has achieved the most wonderful
results for its Members. We begin, as stated, with the most practical as well
as the most effective acquisitions in life; and these are first to be sought by
discussion and advice, as well as planning, in order to find the best way of
adding each day some degree of self-improvement, no matter how slight, and of
saving every month out of one's gains or earnings, something against the
future. Such problems are readily solved by mutual discussion and advice among
half-a-dozen persons who are in earnest.
These basic achievements prove that you are going in the right
direction; neither drifting aimlessly, nor being lured blindly to a
heart-breaking failure.
We have said that a half-dozen persons may, by discussion and advice,
suggest exactly the best methods to be adopted to
this end, and for other uses of magnetism. By this plan many thousands
of men and women have been given the new start in life that they needed.
Nothing is more pleasing than to see a prospective failure turned into a grand
success. This book has been purposely written so as to become of itself an
uplifting and personal power from merely the reading of it.
In its helpfulness to others at certain crises in their lives, and at
turning points where one of two roads must be chosen, either of success or of
failure, this book has come at the right moment and has been found to be most
urgently needed. Its main distribution comes, not from public advertising of
its merits, but from being presented by people who see the vast good it can do
when placed in the hands of others. Charity is becoming universal, and is
failing because it teaches people to become dependent. A wealthy woman whose
life is devoted to charity says, "The best help we can give to those who
might become successful is to show them the way to help themselves; and for
this reason I give to every intelligent man and woman a copy of the book of
personal magnetism." Later on she said, "It has paid
magnificently."
There are men and women of beautiful character and grand impulses who
adopt the following occasions for making presents of this book to others:
When a person is about to make investments, the guiding aid of Mental
Magnitude prevents losses from bad judgment or ill-considered plans.
When evil associates are coming into the lives of the young, the
Substitutes for Magnetism which are explained in the Second Department are
shown to be false allurements.
One friend of humanity says: "I have for years adopted the plan of
giving a copy of the book of personal magnetism to every young woman who is
known to me as about to enter into an engagement of marriage; to every young
man likewise at such time; to every such person on being engaged, if not
already the recipient of the book; and to every married couple as a wedding
present, if neither has had it. I do this without making myself known."
Another woman who is not wealthy but who is charitable, believing that
the best form of charity is to save people from failure says, "My hobby
has been to send the book of magnetism to married couples whose lives are
beginning to drift a I know that I have saved a score of them from disaster;
and I am proud to state that in several cases where husbands and wives had
separated, this book has been the cause of restoring harmony and love after
bringing them together. So it is my form of practical religion."
A man of large charities says, "I have
found that much of my contributions to the welfare of others through organized
charity has been lost in the handling; and when it has reached the needy, it
has only served to take from them their self-reliance. I cannot bear to see a
young man or woman starting on the down grade. So I make a practice of placing
in the hands of young persons who are trying to make their way in the world,
copies of the book of personal magnetism as the best and most inspiring influence
I can bring into their lives. I watch their futures, and my record shows that
this plan has won marked success. It has cost me very little compared with the
good it has done."
There are corporations whose officials keep
themselves informed of the progress, character and value of certain employees,
and who find it has paid to give to the latter copies of this book. There are
merchants who find that their assistants need some real awakening of ambition
and power in order to become more useful, who adopt as a business method the
habit of giving this book to those in whom they take an interest.
Many a young lady of vapid mind whose viewpoint
of life is warped and twisted by the hectic craving for pleasures that are
destructive of character and soul, and whose guiding influences come from
others of the same low moral grade, has been saved from herself, and shown the
way back to high and noble standards of existence by the tremendous power of
this book; and there are watchful and solicitous persons who devote their
charity to the work of distributing this method of helpfulness among them.
As all forms of helpfulness, when of the right
kind, involve some sacrifice, and as Members of the Magnetism Club of America
are helped fully as effectively as they help others, it is no more than a fair
proposition that we make it the duty of such Members to keep on hand at all
times, one or more extra copies of this book of Personal Magnetism; that is one
or more copies
in addition to the one they possess. No one is
under any obligation to do so, as no one is under any obligation to join the
Magnetism Club of America. This Club has never been advertised, and membership
has never been solicited. All we can say is that this Club does in fact bestow
vastly more help and greater benefits to its Members than it can possibly
receive from them.
There are many society women who keep on their
library tables one or more extra copies of this book.
There are many doctors who keep on the tables
in their waiting rooms one or more extra copies of this book.
There are many business men who keep on their
office tables one or more extra copies of this book.
There are persons who live alone who keep in
their rooms one or more extra copies of this book.
These extra copies are ready for immediate delivery
if wanted after being inspected; and we have never heard of a case where an
inquirer was not willing and glad to leave the exceedingly small sum asked for
the book, for it is so small that it cannot represent any substantial fraction
of its worth as "the most powerful agency in life."—Just think that
this sum of three dollars, being the wholesale price which the author has
insisted shall be allowed to any person who owns the volume, is hardly more
than the sum asked for novels. Last year several million novels sold for two
dollars each, most of them trashy; some for $2.50 each; and some for $3 each.
Therefore this book of personal magnetism, now recognized as "the most
powerful agency in life," vastly larger than these novels, and containing
a whole university of training in its pages, may be obtained for the trifling
sum mentioned. This, in educational circles, is known as a merely nominal
price; and it is due to the persistent demand of the author that the price has
been made nominal.
