Book three - Preface
It is intended by this work to sketch in a concise manner what the
possibilities of the human mind are, and how to develop and practically employ
the same in every-day life.
The science is no abstraction, but something to be practiced by
everybody and in all places, and made an efficient help to that noblest of all
studies—the study of MAN. To make this grand subject of mental philosophy
readily understood by all and as readily applied, it is written in ordinary
every-day language and may limp a little here and there. For none of these
faults do I offer an apology to my readers. I ask them to take it as it is—as
something more than a mere introduction to a most interesting and important
subject.
It is desirable to consider the subject under six distinct heads, if
allied. The present volume embraces (1) The Machinery of the "New Thought
Science," (2) Hypnotism, and (3) Mesmerism and Clairvoyance. It is
intended, in due course, to issue a companion volume comprising (4) Suggestive
Therapeutics and Magnetic Treatment, (5) Auto-suggestion and (6) Telepathy;
thus completing the course.
Theoretical discussions will be avoided as far as possible, and I shall
confine myself to simple practical rules throughout.
I make no pretense, however, to originality, as
the whole work, with the exception of some of my own experimental results, is
essentially a compilation from various authorities, too numerous to mention.
