Book one - Preface
If you are wise and want good results you will
keep these teachings to yourself.
The Sages of yore, our forefathers, are the discoverers
of this wonderful and mighty power, which is even now
practiced by many a yogi and fakir, and whose ability
and display of skill have conveyed startling proofs which
have established a standing glory for this Science. What
that was bequeathed to us, in sacred trust, should not be
neglected and allowed to die almost a natural death.
This is no work of the dreamy theorists of the present
day. but of men who have spent years of study and experiment, and those who have led a life far different
from that of ordinary men.
The fruit of their labour is
now laid before you.
Indians, whose religious rituals and ceremonies are
imbued and pregnant with the elementary as well as advanced principles
of Occultism, which lead to the higher
phases—Yoga,
Clairvoyance,
Clairaudience, etc.—have
more facilities to learn this science than others.
Now, this subject which is at once novel and interesting, though the
truths conveyed are aged as the world
and so simple as to appear useless, at one time, did command the
attention of wiser heads than ours.
A mastery of this science means a thorough knowledge
of the Philosophy of Human nature and the Development
of your Soul.
It is for you to decide whether you will direct or be directed, whether
you will command or be commanded, whether you will rise or fall.
Self-esteem, stubbornness, and an arrogant, haughty disposition do not
go to make up, of you, a commander, but you should be made of a different sort
of sterner stuff, which will raise you to praise, power and glory. The
Omnipotent and All Benevolent Creator has not created masters and servants in
this world, and it is you and you alone that go to make yourself. If you put
forth proper effort to cultivate and put into motion, the power that is latent
and inborn in you, the door to success is within your reach; and it is for you
to open it.
WHAT HYPNOTISM IS!
What we present to you in this book is a simple entrance into the realm
of practice and of the wonders and possibilities of Hypnotism. There seems to
be a widespread delusion that Hypnotism is some special and august power
through which the possessor dominates the minds and will-powers of those with
whom he comes in contact and renders them mere automatons. Hypnotism is the
induction of a state which has no physiological difference from that produced
by natural sleep, as the same faculties that are dormant and active in the
natural sleep, are also dormant and active in the Hypnotic sleep. It is one of
the most innocent agents known to modern science. Probably no other science
means so much to the individual and surely, no other may be so quickly and so
easily mastered. A knowledge of it awakens a man to his latent possibilities
and teaches him to respect himself and to appreciate his proper relation to his
fellow-men. It makes him self-centered and confident; it begets in him an
irresistible momentum and makes him master of his own thought and action. It is
a valuable Therapeutic agent in all diseases of the nervous system, and since
all diseases have their nervous aspect, it is of universal use in the relief of
the suffering.
We are convinced that the time is fast approaching when physicians will
place as much confidence in Hypnotism as in Medicine, if not more.
No doubt all admit the great and wonderful possibilities
of this science and its value as a Therapeutic agent;
but no one has hitherto unravelled the reasons for the
wonderful phenomena evidenced during the practice of
Hypnotism and never will be able until man is able to
grasp more of the working of the human brain than all
physiologists
and
psychologists
have hitherto done.
There is a vast field for the intending explorers as
some
of the advanced metaphysicians of the day have even
thrown out the stupendous theory that "death is simply a
habit."
The writers on the subjects usually conclude by telling
their readers of the wonderful possibilities open to
any one who can acquire this power and learn how to
use it. They,
however, say little or nothing of how this
force may be acquired, that is, beyond stating their theories
They deliver discourse—but do not
instruct.
They are preachers—not teachers.
They dwell upon
theories—neglect facts.
We leave the land of theory and enter into the realm of practice, and
will endeavor to instruct you along the lines of development and the use of
this mighty force that you may reproduce the results already obtained by others
and perhaps may become investigators and leaders in the work of blazing the way
through the wood of superstition and mystery in which the subject has been so
long shrouded.
If you grasp the elementary principles of Hypnotism, you will be the
master of the laws through which the human mind is moulded and swayed and of
that intangible and subtle power which controls where even daggers fail.
Patience and perseverance is the price of success. It matters not how
unimportant our instructions may seem to you, or how simple they may appear;
make up your mind to follow them in every detail; do not pass judgment upon a thing until you have given it a fair trial; remember the
greatest things in life are often the simplest things. It may seem to you that
our instructions are so simple to produce the astounding results which we claim
for them, but if you will only give them a thorough trial you will be more
enthusiastic in their praises than we.
Study this book carefully and you will feel astounded at your success
and the number of people you are able to influence and hypnotize. The salient
and all important advice we give you is "Learn each lesson before
taking up the next." Unless you succeed in the first and until you
succeed in that, you should not take up the next lesson. If you proceed
contrary to our directions, we are not responsible for your success. Remember,
the instructions now laid before you are the foundation over which you will
have to build the structure of success. It is the key, and without it the doors
of Occultism will not be opened to you. Master it well and your complete
success is certain.
