XIII Special Hypnotic Therapy
It is obvious from the above that we do not consider it proper to aim
chiefly at a deepening of the hypnosis in every case, and it is very important
to decide whether a treatment requires superficial or profound hypnosis, for
the reason that the patient's mind must be duly prepared at the outset. We
shall therefore now take up the question of what states require profound
hypnosis and what states require only superficial hypnosis. The following general
rule may be stated: Profound hypnosis is as a rule necessary: (1) in the
illumination of amnesias(*) (2) in influencing organic symptoms; (3) in
strengthening the desire to break a habit, in addicts.
(*)To be sure, Frank rejects
profound hypnosis in his cathartic hypnotic-treatments and operates with
hypnoses of medium profundity.
As a matter of principle, profound hypnosis is not necessary in neurotic
disturbances, although it may be desirable in individual cases,
Let us now investigate specific problems.
